Hot Girls Are Writing This From The Future
resolutions, most anticipated(s), and other thoughts heading into 2023
Happy New Year! It seems about write that the first piece of writing I’m publishing this year is for my Substack and not a publication - because as corny as it sounds, one of my goals going into 2023 is to listen more to myself and write not just as the news cycle progresses, but about what moves me. I had a really great 2022 (one that I’m proud of in terms of both critic and non-film-related achievements) but now that we’re in 2023, I’m hoping that I can get back in the grove of feature writing.
I’ve never been one to hardcore stick to New Year’s resolutions, and (perhaps foolishly) I’m hoping that this yer will prove the exception. Instead of one big resolution I’m aiming to keep, I’ve instead come up with a short list of resolutions/goals that I think are modest and reach-able: with the intent of slowly but effectively bettering myself all-around as opposed to taking one big drastic step that may or may not actually work.

So, without further ado and in no particular order, my 2023 resolutions: the first of which is to find some kind of regular schedule/output for Substack! I’ve really been enjoying these newsletters, and though they don’t pay much (yet!) I’m finding that just having an excuse to write whatever’s on my mind helps with creative juices. In a similar vein, one of my major goals for 2023 is to write at least a feature a month.
Though that may not sound like a lot, I think a feature month is acheivable enough that I won’t psych myself out trying to meet the quota, but will also still be frequent enough that I’ll need to be on the lookout for potential topics as a more discerning viewer/critic. How will I find topics for those monthly features?
As part of my next resolution: at least 1 film (for pleasure!) a week. Not a movie I’m assigned to review, not a screener of an upcoming title, but something I chose purely for enjoyment and curiosity - could be a 2000s Disney Channel original, could be a buzzy up and coming title I somehow got my hands one. I’m not going to set an adjacent goal for TV because quite frankly, I watch enough damn TV for pleasure on my own as is.

Where I will be setting a quota for myself, though, is in my reading. Admittedly, I can’t remember the last time I picked up a paperback purely because I wanted to - these days, the most (read: only) day-to-day fiction reading I do on a regular basis can be found on ao3, and I’ll just leave that as a detail for those in the know. Though I know trying to read paperbacks will only result in barnes & noble receipts and unfinished copies, I have had plenty of success recently with audiobooks (post about that possibly coming soon!) so I’m setting a goal of at least one audiobook or book finished per month.

My last and most major career resolution going into 2023 is to be more ambitious and have more confidence in myself: particularly when it comes to interviews, both conducting and pitching. I don’t have hard and fast list of dream bylines or interviews for 2023 as I’ve had in previous years, but I do want to challenge myself to write more interviews and nab at least 2-3 new bylines by the end of the year.
Of course, I’ve got some smaller personal resolutions: making an effort to be active every day, work on spending/budgeting, and get back in the habit of wearing my retainer nightly (glamorous stuff, I know). Though DePaul’s strange schedule means I’ve only got one free day before classes start back up again, I’m hoping to bring ambition, confidence, motivation, and passion into 2023 in my writing and in my life, and I’m excited to take you all along with me.
I couldn’t send out the first newsletter of 2023, though, without a list of my most anticipated titles, so here are some movies, films, and other assorted media I’m looking forward to in 2023:
- Barbie (Film) - Dungeons and Dragons (Film) - Ted Lasso S3 (TV) - Call Me Master (Audio Drama) - You S4 (TV) - Due Lipa Untitled Album (Music) - The Crown S6 (TV) - Taylor Swift Eras Tour (Music) - Scream 6 (Film) - Daisy Jones and the Six (TV) - Alleged Normani Project (Music) - A Stitch in Time (Audiobook) - Picard S3 (hopefully featuring plenty of DS9) (TV) - Untitled Doja Cat Album (Music) - Fast X (Film) - Doctor Who 60th Specials (TV) - Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Pt. 1 (Film) - Untitled KAYTRANADA Album (Music) - Indiana Jones 5 (Film) - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S2 (TV) - Haunted Mansion (Film) - Tron Lightcycle Run (Theme Park Attraction) - Poker Face (TV)
